Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a versatile, minimally invasive solution for enhancing facial volume, smoothing lines, and rejuvenating skin. Offering immediate results, they improve appearance and stimulate collagen production, with manageable risks and minimal downtime.

Aesthetics

Welcome to our guide on dermal fillers, your secret weapon for turning back the clock and achieving a more youthful appearance. In this comprehensive overview, we'll explore what dermal fillers are, how they work, the various types available, their benefits, potential risks, and what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances designed to add volume, smooth lines and wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. They are commonly used to rejuvenate the skin, restore lost volume, and create a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers can be made from a variety of materials, including hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and others.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers work by replenishing lost volume and stimulating collagen production in the skin. When injected into targeted areas, such as the cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds, or under-eye hollows, dermal fillers instantly plump up the skin and smooth out wrinkles and lines. Over time, some types of fillers also promote collagen production, leading to long-lasting improvements in skin texture and elasticity.

Types of Dermal Fillers:

  • Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: These fillers are made from a substance naturally found in the body and are highly effective for adding volume and hydration to the skin.
  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite Fillers: These fillers utilize calcium-based microspheres to stimulate collagen production and provide long-lasting results.
  • Poly-L-lactic Acid Fillers: Known for their ability to stimulate collagen production, these fillers  gradually restore lost facial volume and improve skin texture over time.
  • Others: There are various other types of dermal fillers available, each with its own unique properties and benefits.

Benefits of Dermal Fillers:

  • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Restoration of lost facial volume
  • Enhancement of lip volume and definition
  • Improvement in the appearance of under-eye hollows and dark circles
  • Correction of asymmetrical features and facial contours
  • Non-surgical alternative to facelifts and other invasive procedures

Risks and Considerations:

While dermal fillers are generally safe and well-tolerated, it's important to be aware of potential risks and side effects, which may include:

  • Temporary redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site
  • Risk of infection or allergic reaction, though these complications are rare
  • Rare instances of lumps, bumps, or asymmetry, which can typically be corrected with additional treatment
  • Sensitivity to sunlight or heat following certain types of fillers
  • Possibility of dissatisfaction with results, though this can often be addressed through communication with your provider

What to Expect:

Before undergoing dermal filler treatment, you'll have a consultation with Dr. Liu to discuss your goals, assess your candidacy for the procedure, and develop a personalized treatment plan. The procedure itself typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the areas being treated. After the injections, you may experience some redness, swelling, and mild discomfort, which should subside within a few days. Most patients are able to resume their normal activities immediately following the procedure, though it's important to follow any post-care instructions provided by your provider to ensure optimal results.

Summary:

Dermal fillers offer a safe, effective, and minimally invasive solution for achieving a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. Acne Scar Subcision

Subcision is a minimally invasive procedure targeting depressed acne scars by breaking fibrous bands, allowing scars to elevate for smoother skin. It offers long-lasting results with minimal downtime, suitable for all skin types, though may require multiple sessions.

Aesthetics

If you're tired of battling the remnants of past acne breakouts, Subcision could be the solution you've been searching for. In this comprehensive overview, we'll delve into what Subcision is, how it works, its benefits, potential risks, and what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

What is Subcision?

Subcision is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat depressed acne scars by breaking up fibrous bands that tether the scar tissue to the underlying skin. By releasing these fibrous bands, Subcision allows the depressed scar to rise to the surface of the skin, resulting in a smoother and more even skin texture.

How Does Subcision Work?

During the Subcision procedure, a small needle or blade is inserted beneath the skin's surface through a tiny incision. The needle or blade is then used to manually break up the fibrous bands that are anchoring the scar tissue to the underlying skin. This process helps to release the tension pulling the scar downward, allowing the skin to regenerate and the scar to gradually elevate.

Benefits of Subcision:

  • Improvement in the appearance of depressed acne scars
  • Smoother and more even skin texture
  • Minimal downtime compared to more invasive procedures
  • Long-lasting results with proper skincare maintenance
  • Suitable for all skin types and tones

Risks and Considerations:

While Subcision is generally safe and effective, it's essential to be aware of potential risks and side effects, which may include:

  • Temporary bruising, swelling, and discomfort at the treatment site
  • Risk of infection or scarring, though these complications are rare
  • Mild redness or discoloration, which typically resolves within a few days
  • Sensitivity to sunlight during the healing process
  • Possible need for multiple treatments to achieve optimal results, depending on the severity of the scarring

What to Expect:

Before undergoing Subcision treatment, you'll have a cosmetic consultation with Dr. Liu to discuss your goals, assess your candidacy for the procedure, and develop a personalized treatment plan. The procedure itself typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and number of scars being treated. After the procedure, you may experience some bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort, which should subside within a few days. Most patients are able to resume their normal activities immediately following the procedure, though it's essential to follow any post-care instructions provided by your healthcare provider to ensure optimal results.

Summary:

Subcision is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment option for improving the appearance of depressed acne scars and achieving smoother, more even skin texture. If you're interested in learning more about this procedure or scheduling a consultation, contact us today to take the first step toward saying goodbye to acne scars and hello to renewed confidence.

Radiofrequency Microneedling

Radiofrequency Microneedling combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production, reducing wrinkles, tightening skin, and improving texture. It's a safe, minimally invasive option for rejuvenating skin with minimal downtime.

Aesthetics

Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling is a cutting-edge cosmetic procedure that can help you achieve smoother, tighter, and more youthful-looking skin. In this comprehensive overview, we'll explore what RF microneedling is, how it works, its benefits, potential risks, and what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

What is Radiofrequency Microneedling?

Radiofrequency Microneedling is an advanced cosmetic treatment that combines the benefits of traditional microneedling with the added power of radiofrequency energy. This procedure involves the use of tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body's natural healing process and promoting collagen and elastin production. The addition of radiofrequency energy enhances the effectiveness of the treatment by delivering heat deep into the skin, further stimulating collagen remodeling and tightening the skin.

How Does Radiofrequency Microneedling Work?

During the procedure, a device with fine needles is used to create thousands of microscopic punctures in the skin's surface. These micro-injuries trigger the body's natural wound healing response, prompting the production of new collagen and elastin fibers. Simultaneously, radiofrequency energy is delivered into the deeper layers of the skin, heating the tissue and further stimulating collagen production. The combination of microneedling and radiofrequency energy results in firmer, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin.

Benefits of Radiofrequency Microneedling:

  • Reduction of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Improvement in skin texture and tone
  • Tightening of sagging or loose skin
  • Minimization of acne scars and other types of scarring
  • Reduction of pore size
  • Overall rejuvenation and revitalization of the skin

Risks and Considerations:

While Radiofrequency Microneedling is generally safe and well-tolerated, it's essential to be aware of potential risks and side effects, which may include:

  • Temporary redness, swelling, and discomfort immediately following the procedure
  • Minor bruising or pinpoint bleeding at the treatment sites
  • Rare instances of infection or scarring, particularly if post-procedure care instructions are not followed properly
  • Sensitivity to sunlight during the healing process
  • Changes in skin pigmentation, though these are rare and typically temporary

What to Expect:

Before undergoing Radiofrequency Microneedling, you'll have a cosmetic consultation with Dr. Liu to discuss your goals, assess your candidacy for the procedure, and develop a personalized treatment plan. Depending on your individual needs and preferences, a topical numbing cream or local anesthesia may be applied to ensure your comfort during the procedure. The treatment itself typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being treated. After the procedure, you may experience some redness, swelling, and mild discomfort, which should subside within a few days. Most patients are able to resume their normal activities immediately following the procedure, though it's essential to follow any post-care instructions provided by your healthcare provider to ensure optimal results.

Summary:

Radiofrequency Microneedling is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment option for achieving smoother, tighter, and more youthful-looking skin. If you're interested in learning more about this procedure or scheduling a consultation, contact us today to take the first step toward rejuvenating your skin and restoring your confidence.

Laser Genesis

Adding to the versatility of the ExcelV+ Laser system, Laser Genesis helps add another dimension to your treatment. It excels in treating diffuse redness, acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles with zero downtime.

Aesthetics

Adding to the versatility of the ExcelV+ Laser system, Laser Genesis helps add another dimension to your treatment. It excels in treating diffuse redness, acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines, and wrinkles with zero downtime. It works by gently heating the skin to help stimulate collagen production and constrict small blood vessels. Treatments typically last 15-30 minutes and can be added to your other treatments with the ExcelV+ Laser or done independently. There is no downtime after the procedure. Multiple treatments are usually required to achieve optimal results.

What Does Laser Genesis Treat?

In this mode, some of the skin conditions treated by this laser include:

  • Acne
  • Scarring
  • Large pores
  • Mild skin laxity

What Can I Expect After a Laser Genesis Treatment?

This very tolerable procedure feels like warmth on the skin, and there is no downtime, just a mild pink tone for approximately 20 minutes following the treatment.  Laser Genesis heats the skin to stimulate collagen, so, over time, patients notice tighter skin, reduced pore size, and an overall brighter skin tone.

We recommend a series of treatments to achieve ideal results, and many of our busy patients who can’t afford to endure a lengthy recovery period choose to undergo a series of Laser Genesis treatments to gradually reverse the signs of aging.

How Long Will Results Last?

By gently stimulating collagen growth, the benefits of each Laser Genesis treatment continue for months after the final session. For optimal results, a series of at least 6 treatments spaced 1 month apart would be recommended to start, and additional treatment sessions can be spaced at greater intervals to maintain the results from those initial treatments.

Vein Treatment

The Excel V+ laser is the newest, most advanced laser for treating vascular skin conditions. It combines two different wave lengths to make it the most effective, versatile and powerful vascular laser available.

Aesthetics

The Excel V+ laser is the newest, most advanced laser for treating vascular skin conditions. It combines two different wavelengths to make it the most effective, versatile, and powerful vascular laser available. This includes a powerful 532nm KTP laser, in addition to two 1064nm Nd: Yag laser modes.

The Excel V+ has many benefits over other types of lasers and light treatments such as the pulse dye laser (V-Beam laser) and IPL treatments. Excel V+ is a versatile and powerful laser that can be more effective in treating vascular conditions and it can achieve this in less time (fewer treatments) than any other laser/light-based treatment.

Indications

The Excel V+ can treat vascular lesions of the head, neck, and body. This includes facial telangiectasias, facial redness, rosacea, cherry angiomas, venous lakes, bruising, port wain stains, leg veins, and red scars.

The Procedure

During your cosmetic consultation, Dr. Liu will discuss the specific details of your treatment. This may vary based on your treatment goals, your skin type, your medical history, and any other unique factors related to your care. In general, you should try to avoid excessive sun exposure for the week prior to your treatment. Your skin will need to be cleaned prior to treatment, so do not wear any makeup on the day of your appointment. Safety eye shields will be placed to protect your eyes during treatment. Most treatments will last between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the area(s) treated. Afterward, you will be given instructions on how to care for your skin.

After Procedure

You can resume your daily activities immediately after the procedure. There is rarely any significant discomfort afterward. Depending on what type of lesion is treated, you may see results immediately. There may be no downtime, or your skin may be red for a few days, depending on the type of treatment.

Recovery

Initially, you can have some increased redness over the treated areas. This generally lasts from just a few minutes to three days after the procedure. Medications generally are not necessary to alleviate any discomfort.

Vascular Conditions Treated By The Excel V+ Laser:

Facial Telangiectasia

These are dilated blood vessels that range between 0.1 to 2.0 mm in diameter. These are often small capillaries in the skin of the face. They are most commonly seen on the face around the nose, on the cheeks, and on the chin. They are a cosmetic concern for many people and are easily treated with the Excel V+ laser.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that often presents as facial redness. It is characterized by facial redness in the area of the cheeks, nose, and forehead. It can also affect other areas of the head, neck, and body. The redness is caused by small dilated blood vessels that are difficult to see individually with the human eye. Occasionally, larger dilated blood vessels are noticeable. The Excel V+ is one of the best laser treatments for rosacea.

Venous Lake

Venous lakes are large dilated blue veins that can be up to 1 cm in size. They are commonly seen on the lips but can also be seen on the face and on the ears. Laser treatment with Excel V+ for venous lakes is highly effective with most people only needing 1-2 treatments.

Angioma

Cherry angiomas are small red bumps (raised dots) on the surface of the skin. They are usually 1-3 mm in diameter. They start small and can grow a little bit with time. Cherry angiomas can be located anywhere on the body and usually form in the early adult years and beyond. Sometimes they run in families and it is possible to have hundreds of cherry angiomas. Laser treatment for cherry angiomas is quick, effective, and well-tolerated.

Port Wine Stains

Also known as nevus flammeusport wine stains are birthmarks that are vascular in origin. They range in color from light pink to dark purple. They can occur anywhere on the body but are most common on the face.

Facial Redness

There are many causes for facial redness and this is commonly related to Rosacea. Excel V is an excellent laser treatment for facial redness.

Poikiloderma

Poikiloderma is characterized by red and brown pigmentation of the neck skin and chest skin. It is often a result of sun exposure and sun damage. Laser treatment for Poikiloderma can take several treatment sessions.

Leg Veins

Leg Veins are a result of dilated blood vessels in the legs and range in size from varicose veins to smaller telangiectasias that are also known as spider veins. These dilated blood vessels are seen in the lower extremities because of dependent flow abnormalities. It is much more commonly seen in women than in men. Smaller leg veins are treated with the Excel V laser. These generally take several or more sessions and result in significant improvement in the appearance of the legs.

Scars

Scars are generally noticeable when they have a different coloration from the skin of the surrounding areas. Scare are often more red compared to the surrounding skin. The Excel V is specifically helpful for these red scars. The Excel V laser is one of the best lasers for red scars and helps diminish their noticeability.

Bruising

One added bonus of the Excel V laser is that it helps reduce the appearance of bruising and helps your body get rid of bruising faster than it normally will. Dr. Liu often uses the Excel V laser after surgical procedures in order to minimize downtime for her patients. Results can be seen immediately and bruises can be gone as soon as the next day after Excel V laser treatment for bruising.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a technique that stimulates collagen production to tighten skin, reduce fine lines, and improve your complexion.

Aesthetics

Microneedling is a technique that stimulates collagen production to tighten skin, reduce fine lines, and improve your complexion.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a technique that involves creating tiny channels in the skin surface to stimulate new collagen production. Collagen is key to younger skin because it is the substance that provides the underlying support that your skin needs to resist wrinkles and fine lines. Microneedling is also effective for acne scars, stretch marks, and other minor scars to camouflage them with the surrounding skin. The procedure gradually breaks down scars and promotes skin regeneration.

Am I a Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling is considered safe for all skin types. Some conditions should be resolved prior to having a microneedling treatment, and Dr. Liu can help you decide if microneedling is right for you.

How Long Does Microneedling Take?

The full procedure, including the numbing, takes approximately 1-2 hours. Generally, 3-4 treatments are advised, however, more may be necessary for some individuals and the results are additive. Most patients are red for 24-48 hours or less. That means you can get the procedure performed on a Friday and typically back to normal for work on Monday.

What is Recovery Like After Microneedling?

Your skin may feel sensitive—as if you have a mild sunburn—for the first few days. It may also have a pink or light red appearance. We recommend that you let your skin rest for 72 hours before using any skin care products with active ingredients. You should also avoid sunlight during this time and always use sunscreen. We will go over the proper regimen to follow during your consult & and treatment.

Is Microneedling Safe?

Microneedling is natural, effective, and safe for all skin types. It has minimal downtime and minimal discomfort.

How Long Will Microneedling Results Last?

Collagen production can take up to six weeks. Based on your lifestyle, you may enjoy the benefits of a series of microneedling treatments for six months or longer. The determining factor is how quickly your body breaks down collagen, and this varies by patient.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are used to rejuvenate skin by removing the top dead layer of skin, improving tone, texture, pigmentation, and overall skin health.

Aesthetics

Chemical peels are used to rejuvenate skin by removing the top dead layer of skin, improving tone, texture, pigmentation, and overall skin health. They work to shrink pore size, correct fine lines and wrinkles, stimulate collagen and elastin production, and improve acne and hyperpigmentation.

Immediately after the peel, your skin may feel tight and may be red. Depending on the type and depth of the peel, you may or may not experience actual skin peeling afterward.

A chemical peel is a very safe procedure when performed by Dr. Liu, and there are peels for every skin type.

Why Should You Choose A Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure. Depending on the skin problems you would like to address during your appointment,

  • Light chemical peel. A light (superficial) chemical peel removes the outer layer of skin (epidermis). It’s used to treat fine lines, acne, uneven skin tone, and dryness. You might have a light peel every two to five weeks. There is usually little to no "downtime" with light peels. Many patients will even get these over the lunch breaks and go straight back to work or school.
  • Medium chemical peel. A medium chemical peel removes skin cells from the epidermis and from portions of the upper part of your middle layer of skin (dermis). It’s used to treat wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tone. A medium-depth chemical peel may come with a few days of "downtime", however, it will take fewer treatments to reach your goals compared to a light peel.
  • Deep chemical peel. A deep chemical peel removes skin cells even deeper. Deep peels are used to treat more severe wrinkles and skin concerns.

How To Prepare For Your Chemical Peel:

  1. Don’t exfoliate. Since a chemical peel is an in-depth exfoliation, it’s important that you do not exfoliate for at least 1 week before your appointment. You should also stop any retinol products 1 week before your appointment.
  2. Refrain from using make-up on the day of your appointment.
  3. Avoid the sun.
  4. Stay hydrated.

Keloid Removal

Keloids are firm raised scars that occur after injury to the skin, but have grown beyond the initial wound area. The source of skin injury can vary, and can include acne, ear piericings, or a surgical procedure.

Surgical Dermatology

What Are Keloids?

Keloids are firm-raised scars that occur after injury to the skin but have grown beyond the initial wound area. The source of skin injury can vary and can include acne, ear piercings, or a surgical procedure. Keloids may enlarge over time and can become itchy, tender, or unsightly. Keloids can occur anywhere on the body, but most commonly occur over the chest, back, shoulders, and earlobes. They can vary in color and be skin-colored, pink, red, or dark brown. Some people are genetically predisposed to get keloids.

What Causes Keloids?

We do not completely understand why keloids form. The specifics of the biochemical signaling in wound healing and cell growth have not yet been fully determined. The tendency to form keloids can run in families.

How are Keloids Treated?

Liu Dermatology offers a variety of treatment options as there is no one therapy that works well for everyone. Keloids commonly respond to cortisone injections but other therapies including freezing with liquid nitrogen, surgical removal, compression treatment, irradiation and the use of certain lasers are also treatment options. Treatment is quite effective in improving the appearance of the scar and in greatly improving any symptoms of pain or itch. Any discomfort associated with treatment is well tolerated.

Earlobe Repair

If your earlobes have been damaged, stretched, torn, or are unusual in shape, earlobe repair can surgically correct the problem.

Surgical Dermatology

Earlobe Repair

If your earlobes have been damaged, stretched, torn, or unusual in shape, earlobe repair can surgically correct the problem. Whether you are unhappy with enlarged piercings, formerly worn gauged earrings and want to repair larger holes or your earlobe was torn or ripped, these aesthetic problems can be significantly improved with the help of Liu Dermatology.

Earlobe Repair Experience

Earlobe repair is an outpatient surgery performed at our state-of-the-art dermatology office in Exton, PA. Only local anesthesia is needed to perform the surgery. The procedure is customized for each person and typically requires removing a small quantity of scar tissue and suturing the earlobe to create a more aesthetically attractive appearance. An earlobe repair can make a huge difference in the way you look and can make it much easier to wear earrings again.

Recovering from Earlobe Repair Surgery

Earlobe repair surgery does not involve a significant recovery time and is usually well tolerated. Any discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter medications if needed. On the day of your earlobe repair surgery, you will go home with a small piece of gauze covering the area. You should keep the repair site clean and follow the wound care instructions. You can return to work, school, or other usual activities directly after the procedure, usually with no restrictions. You will be able to shower and shampoo your hair as normal while avoiding the reshaped earlobes. Stitches will be removed in about one week. If you prefer pierced ears, you are free to have them re-pierced after a few short months.

During a surgical consultation, Dr. Liu can evaluate your earlobes and discuss your desired outcome for the surgery.

It’s normal to have about 10–40 moles by the time you’re an adult. Some moles grow slowly and may lighten or disappear over time. Most moles are harmless, but you should see Dr. Liu if you have any concerns about the appearance of a mole, or if it changes color or shape, becomes itchy, or bleeds.

Whether you were born with a mole or it developed over time, you might not like how it looks or feels. If you have a mole that bothers you cosmetically, discuss your concerns with Dr. Liu. Don’t attempt at-home mole removal. Getting a mole removed by a medical professional is safer and you’ll be happier with how you look after you heal.

How Are Moles Removed?

Moles can be removed surgically using local anesthesia. Depending on the type of mole and the location, the removal technique may be different. If you have a mole that you would like removed, please schedule a surgical consultation with Dr. Liu to discuss your options.

What is The Recovery Time?

Healing time depends on your overall health, the size of the mole you had removed, the location of the mole, and the technique used. Skin cancer removal is not a single type of procedure. The way it is performed will largely depend on factors such as the type of skin cancer, as well as the depth and location of a lesion.

Surgical Dermatology

What is Skin Cancer Removal?

Skin cancer removal is not a single type of procedure. The way it is performed will largely depend on factors such as the type of skin cancer, as well as the depth and location of a lesion. Before a skin cancer can be definitively removed, it needs to be biopsied to determine the type of skin cancer.

Most skin cancers need to be treated with surgical excision. This procedure is done using local anesthesia, which minimizes further risk to the patient. After the cancer is excised, the wound may require sutures or reconstructive care to minimize scarring.

Certain types of skin cancer, especially those on the head and neck, need to be treated with Mohs surgery, which is a highly specialized type of skin cancer surgery. Other types of skin cancer may be treated with a simpler procedure called an electrodesiccation and curettage. There are also additional methods of treating skin cancer depending on the specific situation. Dr. Liu will take ample time to review your treatment options with you to select the most appropriate course.

Patients who visit Liu Dermatology are treated with the utmost care we can provide. If scarring is an issue, we can provide laser treatment to improve the appearance of the scar.

Inpatient or Outpatient?

Due to advances in techniques and anesthetics, most dermatologic surgeries can now be performed safely and comfortably in our outpatient setting. Patients are often able to resume normal activities very soon after their procedure, with minimal limitations.

Skin Cancer Screening

Skin cancer screening is the process of detecting pre-cancerous or cancerous skin growths. An annual full body skin cancer screening is recommended for all fair-skinned adults, as well as many other patients depending on risk factors. If you suspect an abnormal mole or growth, contact Liu Dermatology for your screening.

General Dermatology

Skin cancer screening is the process of detecting pre-cancerous or cancerous skin growths. An annual full-body skin cancer screening is recommended for all fair-skinned adults, as well as many other patients depending on risk factors. If you suspect an abnormal mole or growth, contact Liu Dermatology for your screening.

The most common form of cancer in the United States, skin cancer has grown to epidemic proportions, with more than 4 million adults treated for skin cancer each year [source: CDC Skin Cancer Statistics]. Because of this, a thorough head-to-toe skin cancer screening performed by a board-certified dermatologist is recommended annually. If you find any of the following, you should make an appointment to see Dr. Liu:

  • any mole that has changed in color, shape, or size
  • a sore that never completely heals
  • a crusty or scaly lesion
  • a firm, red bump that is growing quickly
  • a waxy or pearly bump

If any of these growths concern Dr. Liu, further diagnostic tests may be performed.

Why Are Skin Cancer Screenings Important?

With skin cancer affecting one in five Americans and over four million new cases diagnosed every year, skin cancer is on the upswing and routine screenings by a board-certified dermatologist are one of the best ways to catch this cancer early. However, with early detection and appropriate treatment, the cure rates for common cancers like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are around 95 percent. A more serious form of skin cancer, melanoma, also has a high cure rate when it is detected and treated before it spreads. Because melanoma can spread quickly and become deadly, it needs to be found early and treated in a timely manner.

What Should I Expect During My Skin Cancer Screening?

Dr. Liu will perform a full-body skin exam by looking at your skin from head to toe with a special tool called a dermatoscope, which allows for visualization of the subtle features within the skin lesions. She will take note of any new or changing moles or growths, and treat them as needed. Tell Dr. Liu about any changes you have noticed, as you know your skin better than anyone. If you have noted any rough areas, itching, bleeding, or changing moles, please be sure to point these out.

How Long Does It Take?

Dr. Liu dedicates up to 30 minutes for skin cancer screenings as adequate time is important for a thorough head-to-toe exam. At this appointment, you will also have ample time to get all your other questions answered. Also, if any spots need to be removed, this can usually be done same-day.

What Should I Do to Prepare For My Skin Cancer Screening?

Nothing special is required, however, here are some tips to facilitate your experience. Please dress in comfortable clothing that you can take off and put back on easily. Do not wear makeup to your appointment, or be prepared to remove any makeup. It’s also advisable to remove all nail polish from fingernails and toenails, as skin cancers can form in nails and nail beds.

What If An Abnormal Spot Is Found?

If an abnormal growth is found during your exam, a skin biopsy may be done. This involves Dr. Liu removing a small sample of skin to send to a lab for examination under a microscope by a pathologist. This is a quick in-office procedure that is done with local anesthesia, usually at the same appointment as the skin cancer screening. Further treatment, if needed, will depend on the pathology results.

Pediatric Patients

At Liu Dermatology, we believe that children deserve the utmost patience, compassion, and empathy when it comes to medical care. We strive to create a warm, caring, and child-friendly environment to put even the most anxious little ones at ease.

Pediatric Dermatology

At Liu Dermatology, we believe that children deserve the utmost patience, compassion, and empathy when it comes to medical care. We strive to create a warm, caring, and child-friendly environment to put even the most anxious little ones at ease. For very young children, less is often more, especially when it comes to procedures. However, in situations where a procedure is necessary, we will do everything we can to make it as smooth and comfortable as possible. We aim to build trusting relationships with our pediatric patients that boost their confidence and prepare them well for future medical encounters.

Common pediatric skin conditions we evaluate and treat:

Eczema

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a condition that causes dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. It's common in young children but can occur at any age. Atopic dermatitis can be long-lasting (chronic) and tends to flare at certain times. It can be irritating but it's not contagious.

Molluscum

Molluscum contagiosum is a common skin condition that typically affects children. It is due to a virus in the skin but it's not dangerous. Molluscum will often go away on its own but it may take several weeks to months. The most effective treatments for molluscum are in-office procedures.

Warts

Warts are common and harmless skin growths that are caused by a virus. Many children will get warts on various parts of their body, and although they can sometimes go away on their own, it may take several months. Liu Dermatology offers a variety of wart treatments for pediatric patients.

Birthmarks/Moles

If your child has a birthmark, you’ll likely see a spot, patch, or lump that looks different from the rest of your child’s skin. You may see this when your baby is born. Some birthmarks appear shortly after birth. Birthmarks come in many shapes and colors. You may see a flat or raised mark. It may be the size of a pinhead or cover a large area of your child’s skin. Most birthmarks fall somewhere in between. A birthmark can be pink, red, tan, brown, or any other color. Some look like a bruise. Others look like a stain on the skin. Some birthmarks are common. It’s estimated that between 3% and 10% of babies are born with a type of birthmark called a hemangioma. Other birthmarks, such as port wine stains, are less common.

Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles or pores are clogged with oil and dead skin cells, resulting in whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples varying in size and severity. Acne can occur anywhere on the body (face, neck, back, shoulders, etc) and affects people of all ages, though this condition is more prevalent among teenagers and young adults. There are many types of effective treatments for acne, which are prescribed based on the patient’s unique profile and specific symptoms.

Liu Dermatology is also proud to be one of the only practices in Pennsylvania using the AviClear device. AviClear’s 1726 nm wavelength treats acne at the source by selectively targeting and suppressing the sebaceous gland safely and effectively. Designed with patient comfort in mind, AviClear is enhanced with AviCoolTM contact cooling for an optimal and safe treatment experience.

Dandruff (cradle cap)

Also called seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff can affect children of all ages. Sometimes it causes itching and flaking in the scalp, and in severe cases, may even cause hair loss.

Disorders of Pigmentation

Skin color is determined by a pigment known as melanin that is made by specialized cells in the skin, called melanocytes. The amount and type of melanin determine a person's skin color. Skin pigment disorders affect the amount of melanin in a child's skin, and thus affect skin color.

All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or other adult guardian at their appointments.

Removal of Growths

Growths can appear almost anywhere on your body. While many are benign, some can eventually pose health problems.

Surgical Dermatology

Evaluation and Removal of Growths

Growths can appear almost anywhere on your body. While many are benign, some can eventually pose health problems. At Liu Dermatology, we remove both benign and malignant skin growths.

About Growth Removal

Most often, growths pose no physical risk. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t have a powerful impact on your life. Many growths can appear in highly visible areas and make it difficult to build confidence in your appearance. So while there is often no bodily harm, they can cause significant psychological and emotional stress.

Dr. Liu is a skilled professional who can remove growths safely and expertly. If you have a growth and are considering removal, please schedule a surgical consultation with Dr. Liu.

Cyst Removal

Cysts can look like lumps under the skin, and start as small pockets of tissue encased in a capsule. Cysts can form on many different areas of the body and may start as ingrown hairs, or acne, or appear out of nowhere. Areas on which cysts may form include but are not limited to:

  • Back
  • Neck
  • Face
  • Scalp

Typically, this type of growth will feel like a small hard nodule beneath the skin. They might start small enough to not be visible, but that can change over time.

Without treatment, some cysts will continue to enlarge. At some point, this growth may burst, causing inflammation in surrounding tissue as well as discomfort. Other times, a cyst may remain stable for many years. Although cysts are not dangerous, they can be uncomfortable or unsightly.

Lipoma Removal

Lipomas are benign growths that can form beneath the skin as an overgrowth of fat. They can cause both discomfort and cosmetic concerns. Lipomas can be removed by a trained and experienced dermatologist.

How Can I Tell if I Have a Cyst or Lipoma?

Both cysts and lipomas can look and feel similar, so it is best to have any growths evaluated by a professional as soon as possible. In general, neither growth will go away on its own.

How Cyst Removal & Lipoma Removal Work

For both cyst removal and lipoma removal, we use a simple surgical procedure called an excision. The procedure is both quick and quite comfortable, as we use a local anesthetic to ensure you feel no discomfort during the procedure. The procedure is also very safe in that it's done only with local anesthesia (you will not be put to sleep).

Once a cyst or lipoma is removed, you should be able to return to your daily life with minimal restrictions in your activities during the wound-healing process. When done properly, the procedure leaves little chance of recurrence. That means the odds are that your cyst or lipoma will not grow back.

However, after the surgery, it is important to follow Dr. Liu's instructions for caring for the site. Though the incisions are small, allowing them to heal properly is vital for achieving optimal results.

Is Cyst Removal or Lipoma Removal Right for Me?

If you have a growth that you would like removed, the first step is to schedule your consultation with Dr. Liu. She will walk you through the removal options, and together you can choose the one that best suits your needs. We provide complete information at every step of the process, so you are never in the dark about any aspect of your procedure. If you have questions at any point, we are happy to answer them.

AviClear™

We are excited to announce that we are now offering AviClear™, the first and only FDA-cleared laser device for the treatment of mild to severe acne.

General Dermatology

About AviClear™

We are excited to announce that we are now offering AviClear™, the first and only FDA-cleared laser device for the treatment of mild to severe acne. This new treatment significantly eliminates acne and delivers long-lasting results in just three 30-minute sessions.

To understand how AviClear™ works, it’s important to understand how breakouts happen. Acne forms when sebum, the oily substance on your skin, combines with dead skin cells and clogs your pores. Most acne treatments target other things that cause acne, but not the production of sebum. The AviClear™ laser selectively targets the sebum-producing cells in the skin and downregulates their activity. Patients can achieve long-lasting improvement in their acne with just 3 AviClear™ treatments, spaced 1 month apart.

In clinical studies, 91% of patients responded to treatment and 80% saw at least half of their acne clear. The results may continue to improve with time – even several months after your treatment sessions are finished.

Unlike most traditional acne treatments AviClear™ is free of harmful side effects, free of chemicals, and safe for all skin types. In clinical studies, patients tolerated the treatment well, and with minimal discomfort.

After treatment, mild symptoms such as redness, inflammation, and transient acne flare-ups are normal but fade quickly. There is no "downtime" after the procedure and you can quickly resume your daily activities.

What is AviClear™ ?

AviClear™ is a laser that targets acne at the source. This revolutionary laser treatment uses a 1726nm wavelength to selectively target and downregulate the sebaceous glands. Overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands is one of the leading causes of acne.

How many treatments are needed?

Three quick 30-minute treatment sessions over 3 months.

When was AviClear™ cleared by the FDA?

AviClear™ was cleared by the FDA on March 24, 2022. It is the first and only energy-based device to receive the designation for the treatment of mild, moderate, and severe acne.

What were the results of the AviClear™ clinical trials?

In addition to reducing existing acne, clinical trials showed that future breakout episodes are shorter, less intense, and more infrequent following the AviClear™ procedure. In clinical studies, 80% saw at least half of their acne clear. 87% of patients report being “satisfied” or “very satisfied” at week 12. There were no significant adverse events observed in the clinical trials and all post-treatment effects were transient and self-resolving.

Is AviClear™ comfortable?

AviClear™ is equipped with exclusive AviCool™ sapphire skin cooling and sensory controls that maintain the skin’s temperature during treatment for a more comfortable experience. No pain mitigation was utilized or required by any clinical study participant, nor were there any reportable events observed during the clinical trials. Most patients who have been treated by Dr. Liu thus far have shared that the discomfort level ranged from 1-4 on a scale of 1-10 (1 = minimal to no discomfort).

How does AviClear™ feel?

During treatment, you may notice a slight snapping sensation. In general, patients tolerate the treatment well, without the need for pain mitigation or the need to stop the treatment session.

What areas can be treated with AviClear™?

AviClear™ is currently cleared to treat the face. However, it may soon be used to treat body acne as well.

Is AviClear™ safe for all skin types?

AviClear™ has been proven safe and effective for all skin types and tones.

Wrinkle Injections

Xeomin, like Botox, is an FDA-approved injectable medication used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. It is a newer form of neurotoxin when compared to Botox.

Aesthetics

Xeomin, like Botox, is an FDA-approved injectable medication used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. It is a newer form of neurotoxin when compared to Botox.

Xeomin is considered to be equally as potent as Botox and is used at a 1:1 ratio for treatment. For example, 20 units of Botox equals 20 units of Xeomin.

Xeomin is also a purer form of botulinum toxin because it does not contain complex proteins (more below, see resistance) or preservatives.

What is Xeomin Used For?

Xeomin is indicated for the cosmetic treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. It is often called “the new Botox” and works in the same manner as Botox.

It is FDA-approved for cosmetic treatment of the glabellar region (forehead frown/scowl lines) but is commonly used in other areas of the face and neck.

Can Xeomin be Used For Crow's Feet?

Yes, Xeomin can be used for crow’s feet! Xeomin is a perfect treatment for fine lines and wrinkles on the face and around the eyes. Anything that you would use Botox to treat, can be treated with Xeomin.

How Long Does it Take For Xeomin to Work?

Depending on which study you read, Xeomin is the fastest, or one of the fastest, anti-wrinkle medications to kick in. Most people start seeing changes within 1-3 days with full results between 7-14 days. Like Botox, most treatments last an average of 3 months.

Xeomin Vs. Botox, How Are They Different?

As above, Xeomin is considered a more pure form of neurotoxin. This is because there are no preservatives used to make it and it also does not have the surrounding protein complex that Botox has. Xeomin is essentially only the "active portion" of Botox with no other additives. Otherwise, they are nearly the same medication and last the same amount of time for most people.

Is Xeomin an Alternative to Botox?

Yes, Xeomin is a great alternative to Botox. For those people that Botox does not work on, Xeomin is a great “naked” alternative. For those who have developed "resistance" to Botox, Xeomin is the best option.

Does Botox or Xeomin Last Longer?

Many injectors will tell you that Xeomin and Botox have similar lifespans. In some recent studies, Xeomin has lasted several weeks longer than its Botox counterpart. This may mean some extra time in between visits!

If I am Resistant to Botox, Will Xeomin Work For me?

Yes, Xeomin should work for you. To explain:

Since Xeomin does not contain the protein complex (which the body would react to and create immune cells to fight) there is no immune response and therefore no resistance can be formed to Xeomin.

Dysport contains the same protein molecule as Botox so in theory if you are resistant to Botox you could also form resistance to Dysport.

What Are The Ingredients in Xeomin?

Lyophilized powder containing botulinum toxin A, human albumin, and sucrose (a sugar). There are no preservatives.

Does Xeomin Hurt?

Most people find Xeomin injections to be very tolerable. The smallest of needles is used for injection and most people feel a tiny poke of the needle only in sensitive areas. If you have concerns about pain, let Dr. Liu know and accommodations can be made.

Will People Know I Had Xeomin?

If done correctly the majority of people will not know you’ve had Xeomin injections. They will more likely notice that you look nice or look younger but will not be able to pinpoint exactly what is different.

How Long Does Xeomin Last?

It can vary for each person and for the site injected but the average is 3 months. Areas with a lot of movement, like around the eyes and mouth, may only last 2 months. Whereas areas that move less, like the forehead, may last 3-4 months.

The more consistently the injections are done the longer it lasts as the muscle is weakened with each session.

What is a Frozen Face?

A “frozen face” is where someone has had injections all over their face and is unable to make normal facial expressions. We have seen this in the media but it is very rare when the injections are performed by a skilled professional. Dr. Liu aims to give her patients the most natural results possible and custom tailors each treatment based on the exact preferences of each patient.

Can I Lay Down After My Xeomin Treatment?

After your Xeomin injections, you should avoid laying down for 4 hours if you can. Patients are also instructed to not rub or massage the area treated.

What Are The Bad Side Effects?

When used cosmetically in healthy people side effects are very rare. Any discomfort or swelling at the injection sites usually disappears within minutes. Most patients will not experience any side effects beyond this.

Other possible side effects include bruising, asymmetrical results, heavy brows, dropped brows, or a droopy eyelid. These are extremely rare.

An experienced injector will know how to avoid these side effects and the good news is that none are permanent - they wear off as the medication wears off (and often long before that).

What Are The Benefits of Xeomin?

Like with Botox injections, Xeomin works by smoothing the appearance of facial wrinkles/lines. Xeomin is a more purified drug that can work quicker than Botox with the same lasting effects. Xeomin restores a more youthful appearance while still looking natural.

Who Are The Best Candidates?

Generally speaking, ideal candidates for Xeomin are those wanting a more refreshed appearance and to soften lines/wrinkles. Also, good candidates are those who are not pregnant, in good health and do not have any allergies to other botulinum toxin products or albumin. Xeomin is also great for those who want a more purified drug compared to other botulinum toxins.

How Often Can I Get Treatments?

Xeomin, like any other botulinum toxin, lasts anywhere from 3-4 months. Ideally, you can get 3 to 4 Xeomin treatments per year. It is best to speak with Dr. Liu about Xeomin treatments and how often might be best for you. This can be done during a cosmetic consultation.

Acne Treatment

Teens are no strangers to the unfortunate experience of acne. Inflammation and irritation of the skin around the face can be persistent and challenging to treat.

General Dermatology

About Acne

Teens are no strangers to the unfortunate experience of acne. Inflammation and irritation of the skin around the face can be persistent and challenging to treat. For many teens, the issue only lasts a couple of years.

But, for others, the struggle can persist into adult years, or start for the first time later in life. Acne regularly proves to be a significant obstacle to building self-confidence and accepting your appearance. Extreme cases can make individuals feel helpless in a fight against their own bodies.

At Liu Dermatology, we have seen many teens and adults struggle unnecessarily with the emotional toll of chronic acne. If you are ready to resolve the problem of acne, schedule a consultation with Dr. Liu.

Common Causes of Acne

A common misconception is that an affected individual is at least partly to blame for his or her condition. We see this as trying to put the burden on the victim. True, certain factors can increase breakout frequency. But, much is beyond the individual’s control.

In reality, the cleanliness of the skin is a minor trigger for acne breakouts. As much as you wash your face or body, there are other determinants that might slide under the radar.

Contributing factors for acne include:

  • Bacteria
  • Clogged pores
  • Genetics
  • Stress
  • Hair and makeup products
  • Nutrition
  • Hormones

Types of Acne

Acne may look different in every person. Some of the usual lesions that we see in the acne patient include:

Blackheads

These are clogged pores that have a dark surface. These “pimples” are open. These most commonly appear on the face, especially the nose, chin, and forehead.

Whiteheads

These are closed “pimples” also formed from clogged pores. These can be found on many parts of your body, such as the face, chest, back, and even your shoulders.

Pustules

These are fluid-filled pockets that look red and irritated. They also can appear anywhere on the body.

Papules

These often feel tender to the touch and are raised red bumps.

Cysts

These deep, fluid-filled sacs may cause scarring. Treating them should be left to a professional.

Acne Treatments

Treatment options can depend on the type and severity of the acne. Some forms are easier to address than others, while others might demand a more extensive treatment regimen.

Treatment plans can become more complex if there are multiple forms of acne to address. The first step in fighting acne is understanding which type you are suffering from.

Non-inflammatory Acne

This category includes blackheads and whiteheads. For very mild cases, a salicylic acid cleanser may help. It removes dead skin cells naturally, which are one of the culprits in clogging pores. For more severe cases, a prescription medication is often necessary. At Liu Dermatology, we offer custom-made prescription topical medications that target mild to moderate acne from multiple angles.

Inflammatory Acne

When an acne lesion is inflamed, it can become tender or painful to the touch. Inflammatory acne includes pustules, papules, and cysts. Clogged pores play a role, but the source of the inflammation is often bacteria and/or hormones. Oftentimes, inflammatory acne can result in scarring, which is why it is important to get it under control quickly. Typically, the management of inflammatory acne requires a multi-faceted approach. Treatment regimens may consist of topical medications, oral antibiotics, hormonal medications, isotretinoin (Accutane), or AviClear™ laser treatments. If you have inflammatory acne, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Liu for a personalized treatment regimen.

Rashes

When Should I See Dr. Liu About a Skin Rash

Whether uncomfortable or unsightly, a skin rash can be alarming. Rashes can occur due to various triggers, such as an allergic reaction, infection, internal illness, or even stress. Dermatologists are the only physicians who are specifically trained to evaluate and treat all types of rashes.

At Liu Dermatology, we understand that when you have an uncomfortable rash, you require immediate attention and cannot wait weeks to months for an appointment with a dermatologist. That's why we offer same-day or next-day appointments so that you can be appropriately treated before your rash spreads or worsens.

What Types of Rashes Can Be Treated At Liu Dermatology?

As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Liu can evaluate and treat all types of rashes. She also has extensive experience treating rashes in all skin types, including ethnic skin.

Here are some common types of rashes that we treat:

  • eczema
  • psoriasis
  • poison ivy/contact dermatitis
  • dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis
  • lichen planus
  • folliculitis
  • lupus and other autoimmune conditions
  • many more

What Should I Expect During My Rash Appointment?

Dr. Liu will take a thorough history of your symptoms and examine your rash carefully. Most of the time, a diagnosis can be made based on the history and examination, after which a treatment plan will be discussed. If you require prescription medications to treat your rash, you have the option of picking them up on-site, as we carry the most common dermatologic medications. Or, you could choose to have the prescriptions sent to your preferred pharmacy.

For some types of rashes, further workup is needed to arrive at a diagnosis. This may include a skin biopsy, blood tests, or other diagnostic testing. If any additional testing is required, it will be discussed at the time of your appointment, and any tests that can be performed in the office will be done same-day.

Rosacea Treatment

That is why we are proud to offer state-of-the-art rosacea treatment. By treating your rosacea, you can take the first steps to restore confidence in your skin and an overall improved sense of self.

At Liu Dermatology, we offer a full range of treatments for rosacea. Every patient receives a fully tailored treatment plan based on their unique needs and goals. Call us today to get started on reaching your goals, stepping toward clearer skin and a brighter future!

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea can definitely interfere with your quality of life, but you are not alone. This skin condition is quite common, and many people have it at some point in their lives. It is characterized by redness, bumps, or broken blood vessels on your face that can worsen due to certain triggers. Sometimes it can be mistaken for acne, which can lead to receiving the wrong treatment.

Below are some signs you might have rosacea. If you do, give us a call and we can get started on putting together a personalized plan for treating your rosacea.

  • Facial Redness: Persistent redness is a sign of rosacea. Small blood vessels swell, becoming visible around your nose and cheeks.
  • Red Bumps: In addition to redness, you may have bumps that look like acne.
  • Eye Concerns: If rosacea affects your eyes, you may experience dryness, irritation, and a gritty sensation, as well as eyelid redness/swelling. This may be the first sign of rosacea.
  • Swollen Nose: You may also notice swelling around your nose.

To determine if you have rosacea or another skin condition, we recommend visiting Dr. Liu to receive a full assessment. Treating this condition at home can be challenging and may not deliver results.

What Causes Rosacea?

While rosacea is quite a common skin condition, there is still no certain cause of it. However, it does seem to appear most often in middle-aged women with lighter skin. Still, almost anyone can get this condition.

Though the causes are not known, we still have the ability to treat this condition. While it will disappear on its own for many people, it can often come back regularly for weeks or months at a time.

How to Treat Rosacea?

Rosacea can be treated with trigger avoidance, topical medications, oral medications, or laser procedures. Most patients will achieve the best results with a combination of these modalities. One of the most effective ways to treat rosacea is through light or laser treatment. Using targeted amounts of energy, we can decrease redness in the skin by targeting small blood vessels.

Laser treatment for rosacea is highly effective for decreasing redness and restoring your skin to its clear, original state. With laser treatment for rosacea, you can see significant improvements in the texture and color of your skin with just 1-3 treatments.

Excel V+ for Rosacea

The Excel V+ laser is the newest, most advanced laser for treating vascular skin conditions. It combines two different wavelengths of light to make it the most effective, versatile, and powerful vascular laser available. This includes a powerful 532 nm KTP laser wavelength, in addition to two 1064 nm Nd: Yag laser modes.

The Excel V+ has many benefits over other types of lasers and light treatments such as the pulse dye laser (V-Beam laser) and IPL treatments. Excel V+ is a versatile and powerful laser that can be more effective in treating vascular conditions and it can achieve this in less time (fewer treatments) than any other laser/light-based device.

Is Laser Treatment Right for My Rosacea?

Our rosacea laser is safe, effective, and non-surgical. As such, it is open to a wide range of patients, so if rosacea has been interfering with your life, call us today to get started.

The first step is to come in for a consultation and skin examination with Dr. Liu. This way, we can fully understand your unique needs and build a plan around them. As part of your treatment plan, we can see what methods will work best and determine the number of treatment sessions.

Results & Recovery

Though you may see significant improvements after a single session, most patients will need several to fully reach their goals. After each session, your body should respond to the treatment, and your rosacea should begin to clear up.

You may experience some redness or swelling after each treatment session. But this will quickly fade and should not interfere much with your life. Treatments can be custom-tailored to suit your specific needs with little to no downtime.

General Dermatology

Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

Sweating is a natural cooling function of the body, which normally occurs after exercise or during hot weather. However, profuse sweating that occurs for no obvious reason can be considered excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis may cause social discomfort or embarrassment if it is chronic and left untreated, and this can become debilitating in some cases. A variety of treatment options are available to improve this condition at Liu Dermatology.

Hair Loss (Alopecia)

Hair loss or alopecia is a condition that can affect anyone at any age. Alopecia can have many causes, including a genetic predisposition or family history, stress, an autoimmune condition, side effects from medication, poor nutrition, excessively tight hairstyles, and/or underlying medical conditions. Hair loss of any type can cause significant stress and emotional discomfort, especially when it is visible. Hair loss can be slowed, stopped, or even reversed with appropriate and timely treatment. A consultation with Dr. Liu is recommended to discuss the cause of your hair loss and the best treatment options for you.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a disorder of pigmentation where color is lost from the skin, often in patches. Vitiligo is considered an autoimmune condition in which your immune cells attack the pigment-producing cells of the skin (melanocytes). Over time, this can lead to large areas of uneven pigmentation that can be emotionally distressing. Dr. Liu will go over your options for treating vitiligo with the goal of returning your skin to its normal color.

Keloids

Keloids are caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue over the area at which an injury occurred. Keloids can sometimes be itchy or painful. Additionally, keloids may cause emotional distress if located on a visible part of the body, like the face or ears. If you have a keloid, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Liu to review your treatment options.

Melasma

Melasma is a skin condition characterized by brown or gray-brown patches on the face. It is usually on the cheeks but can affect any part of the face. While the exact causes are not yet definitive, melasma may be triggered by sun exposure, hormones, or genetics. Melasma is treatable and with the right regimen, it may even clear.

Nail Abnormalities

Nail abnormalities are usually caused by skin disorders or infections, but they can be caused by other underlying medical conditions as well. Symptoms of nail abnormalities can include but are not limited to overly brittle nails, indented nails, thickened or overgrown nails, white nails, spoon nails, yellow nails, discolored and inverted edges, and ridging of the nails.

Scars

Scarring is a natural part of the skin’s recovery process from a wound or injury. As the wound heals, fibrous skin tissue is formed in the area where the damage occurred. Usually, scars will fade away on their own when the initial wound is minor or heals well. However, some scars can be very noticeable and may cause emotional stress if located on a highly visible part of the body, such as the face, neck, or arms. Liu Dermatology offers a wide range of scar treatments. Please book a consultation with Dr. Liu to discuss the best options for your scar.

Warts

Warts are small, hard growths on the skin characterized by their rough texture and appearance. Caused by the human papillomavirus, these usually occur on the hands and feet and are generally painless unless they are located on the bottom of the feet. While some warts are mild and may go away on their own, persistent warts may require medical intervention and removal. Effective solutions for wart removal can include cryotherapy (freezing the wart off with liquid nitrogen), immunotherapy, and laser treatments.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept my insurance?

We welcome all patients at Liu Dermatology, regardless of insurance status. Dr. Liu is an independent physician who works directly for her patients. We are "out-of-network" with all insurances and do not submit claims to insurances. We offer fair and transparent pricing (Medical, Surgical, Aesthetic) so that patients can get excellent care without needing insurance.

Why would I choose to be seen at an office that doesn't take my insurance?

There are numerous reasons to seek specialty care "outside the system". Most practices that accept insurance spend an unfathomable amount of time and resources dealing with the constraints imposed by insurance. At Liu Dermatology, we are able to allocate all of our time and resources to where they matter the most - the patient experience. This is evidenced by our easy and timely scheduling, low wait times, and double to triple the average physician face-to-face time. At a traditional dermatology office, you may wait 4-6 weeks to be seen, only to sit in a waiting room for a long time and then spend less than 5 minutes with the physician. At Liu Dermatology, appointments can often be scheduled same-day, waiting room times are minimal, and you will have ample one-on-one time with Dr. Liu to get all your questions answered. We also offer prescription medications on-site, so you can avoid a cumbersome trip to the pharmacy. In addition, we offer numerous other "concierge" services to further enhance the patient experience. Our pricing (Medical, Surgical, Aesthetic) is completely transparent so you will not get any surprise bills from us after your visit. For patients who have high deductibles, high copays, or other restrictions imposed by insurance, and for uninsured patients, direct care may be the more economical choice.

What type of payments do you accept?

We accept cash, debit cards, credit cards (VISA, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express), Health Savings Account (HSA) cards, and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards. We do not accept checks at this time.

How are you able to charge such affordable rates for your services? Every other office I've been to charges a lot more.

As a direct care practice, we do not deal with insurances, and this significantly reduces our overhead costs. We are able to run a much more efficient practice without the "middle man", and focus our resources where they matter. This translates to lower prices that directly benefit our patients.

Can I submit to my insurance for out-of-network coverage?

Yes, for patients with private insurances. You may be able to receive some reimbursement from your insurance for visits at Liu Dermatology and can request a coded receipt from us for a nominal fee. However, since we do not deal directly with insurances, we are not able to submit on your behalf. The amount your insurance reimburses you depends on your plan, but it may be less than the cost of the visit. Medicare/government insurance patients cannot, by law, get reimbursement for services rendered at Liu Dermatology.

What if I have Medicare, Medicare supplement, Medicaid, Tricare, or other government insurances?

Patients with government insurances can be seen at Liu Dermatology, but cannot submit for reimbursement from their insurances. If you have Medicare, Medicare supplement, Medicaid, Tricare, or other government insurances, you may be asked to sign a private contract with Dr. Liu before your appointment.

Can I use my insurance to cover pathology and lab fees?

Yes. Depending on your plan, you may be able to get these fees covered, but details of such coverage are your responsibility. We would be happy to ask for pathology and labs to be submitted through your insurance, upon request. We are not responsible for any additional bills from outside labs that you may receive as a result of using your insurance.

Is it better for me to use my insurance for pathology, or to pay the self-pay fee?

Excellent question - it depends on your insurance. Most pathology billed to insurance will be about $200, whereas we have negotiated a flat $75 fee that is collected at the time of your visit. Our self-pay pathology fee especially benefits those without insurance, and those with insurance but with high deductibles that they do not plan to meet. You can choose the option that works best for you.

What if I'm not sure of what type of appointment to schedule?

Feel free to give us a call at 610-634-8500 for scheduling assistance. Most new patients will need a Level 2 visit. Examples of conditions/treatments and their corresponding visit levels can be found on our pricing (Medical, Surgical, Aesthetic) page. When in doubt, just schedule a Level 2 visit. If you end up scheduling the wrong appointment, we can convert it to the appropriate appointment once you arrive.

What if I need to get a procedure during my appointment?

Unlike insurance-based practices, Liu Dermatology includes most minor procedures with office visits. The one exception is if you schedule a Level 1 visit but end up needing a skin biopsy, which is not included with Level 1. If this happens, we can convert the appointment to the appropriate level (with your prior approval), as long as time permits. If your condition requires several biopsies or a more extensive procedure (rarely happens), we will try to accomplish as much as we can at the visit, and schedule a second visit to complete the procedures.

Will I ever be charged more than the appointment I scheduled for?

Pathology and lab specimens, which are processed outside of our practice, may incur additional fees. However, you will be made aware of this before they are sent. Otherwise, you would only be charged more if you require additional services that are not included with your visit level (and would be notified prior). You always have the right to decline treatment and will never be charged more than what was agreed upon at booking, without notice.

Is there a membership fee?

No. Unlike a concierge practice, we do not collect any membership or subscription fees. Any patient can be seen at Liu Dermatology and patients only pay for the services they need.

What does it mean to be a board-certified dermatologist?

A dermatologist is a physician who was completed 4 years of undergraduate college, 4 years of medical school, 1 year of post-graduate "on the job" training (internship), and 3 years of dermatology-specific "on the job" training (residency). That's 12 years of higher education! All physicians (dermatologists, family physicians, cardiologists, neurosurgeons, etc) complete the same 4 years of medical school prior to pursuing training specific to their fields. Internship/residency is an intense and rigorous training process that allows physicians to truly become experts in their fields, and gain the skills necessary to practice independently. At minimum, dermatologists receive 12,000-16,000 hours of direct patient care training (mostly in dermatology) before practicing independently. In order to become "board-certified", a dermatologist must pass a comprehensive 2-day exam to prove competency in the field. Ongoing participation in continuing medical education activities is required to maintain board certification.
